Romeo and Juliet
Romeo and Juliet is a three-act ballet by Sergei Prokofiev, based on the play of the same name by William Shakespeare.
It was composed in the spring of 1935, shortly after the composer’s return to the Soviet Union.
The story takes place in Verona, Italy in the 16th century. The Montaigu and the Capulets, two noble families, are in constant confrontation. From these two rival lines, Romeo and Juliet, try in vain to love each other.
Thanks to its melody, its rhythm and the memorable nature of its main themes including the famous and sinister “Dance of the Knights”, Romeo and Juliet is today one of the most appreciated ballets in the world.
This year, the famous Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus (Minsk) will perform this timeless classic masterpiece.
