After many years, the Latvian National Ballet returns to France to perform Peer Gynt, a ballet by Edward Clug set to Edvard Grieg’s famous melodies.
Inspired by Henrik Ibsen’s play, Peer Gynt is a narrative ballet that takes the audience on a fantastical, magical odyssey, following a man’s journey into adulthood.
Peer Gynt is an antihero torn between ambition and cowardice, dreams and reality. From the mountains of Norway to the deserts of Africa, he travels the world in search of himself, embarking on countless adventures, encountering fantastical beings, and chasing illusions. His blatant lies allow him to escape reality, transforming his morally dubious misadventures into heroic feats. Peer Gynt stubbornly pursues his dreams on a journey of self-discovery that is at times strange, yet deeply human.
With his distinctive choreographic style, blending dramatic power, psychological insight and striking imagery, Edward Clug offers a modern interpretation of the original work. The powerfully evocative visuals, combined with one of the most famous musical scores in the repertoire, create a vibrant performance that appeals to dance enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
